About Liposuction Surgery

Lipo is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contours by removing excess fat beneath the skin. It does not target the muscles, only fat, however, it can also offer some skin tightening. Lipo also reshapes and improves contour for a more youthful attractive appearance. Another benefit of liposuction is the overall reduction in volume or circumference. Significant fat removal can provide more latitude with clothing options, increase self-confidence, and boost the desire to exercise and eat healthy to maintain or further improve results.

Lipo involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Liposuction techniques have evolved, and there are many choices, including Tumescent, Smartlipo, CoolLipo, LipoLite, and ProLipo Plus. Dr. Hurvitz will determine the best liposuction method for you during the consultation.

The abdomen is the most common area of the body to be treated by liposuction among both men and women. Important factors that affect the success of abdominal liposuction include the amount and location of abdominal fat, history of weight gain and weight loss, history of pregnancy, and the age and sex of the patient. All of these factors will determine if a patient is a good candidate for liposuction.

The Location of abdominal fat is an important factor in determining if liposuction will be successful. Abdominal fat occurs in two different areas:  superficial (subcutaneous) and deep (intra-abdominal). Superficial fat is located just below the skin and above the abdominal muscles. The deep abdominal fat wraps itself around the internal organs. Subcutaneous fat can be successfully removed by liposuction. Intra-abdominal fat cannot be removed by liposuction because it is too dangerous.  Fat on the intestines can only be diminished by weight loss through diet and exercise. Most patients do have more subcutaneous fat than intra-abdominal fat, so most patients will have a good result.

Areas Commonly Treated with Liposuction

Liposuction is quite versatile and can be used to treat a variety of regions:

  • Flanks Hips
  • Inner and Outer Thighs
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bra Roll
  • Breasts
  • Neck
  • Buttocks
  • Chin

This technique is also used during several plastic surgery procedures, including male breast reduction to resolve gynecomastia (oversized male breasts).

Ideal Candidates

Good candidates for lipo include:

  • Adults within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin, and good muscle tone
  • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Non-smokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook, realistic expectations, and specific goals in mind for body contouring

Anesthesia Options

Local Anesthesia: Performed in-office. The Patient is given a sedative to relax. A local anesthetic is injected into the surgical site for numbing. This is very similar to having dental work. This option has little to no risk. Patients typically do not feel nauseous, but they may be a little sleepy from the sedative.

General Anesthesia: Performed in an outpatient surgical center. Anesthesia is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The patient is completely asleep. Maybe groggy and nauseous for a few hours following surgery. Carries risks not associated with local anesthesia.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction Recovery and Healing

Follow Dr. Hurvitz’s care directions during your lipo healing period to ensure the best possible results. This also minimizes the chance of complications.

The healing and recovery process after liposuction will involve wearing a post-surgical elastic garment for a time. This garment helps to control and reduce the bruising and swelling that is common after any surgical procedure. It also encourages the skin to better conform to the region’s new contours.

Liposuction Cost

Because lipo is a specialized process depending on the details of the procedure, its price varies from case to case. The number and size of areas treated, type of anesthesia used, and procedure length all impact liposuction cost.
